Full moon tonight! 🌚 Fall to Center, my exhibition enters its last month, closing on Dec 15. @airdgallery Pictured is a glass piece I blew with copper and glass dancing 💃🏻 @pilchuckglassschool last spring with the addition of a cast wax cow horn.

Titled BD 500, this piece explores biodynamic principles I learned about while my kids attended Waldorf school. At times strange yet deeply resonating, Steiner and anthroposophy (the word coming from the Greek anthropos/human and Sophia/wisdom) outlines practical rituals to celebrate the spirit of working with the land. I have written a bit more about my time at Pilchuck on ‘ye ol’ blog or news/letters w a link on the link tree 🌳 You can even sign up for news/letters when I figure out how! Lol

Special thanks to all my classmates at Pilchuck, our talented instructor @jenniferbuenostudio the best TAs @curios_glass pictured, helping me spin that crazy thing and @zachabellaglass (photo cred!) and @suzymmelo for yr breath and friendship in this piece. And all the people there that fed me literally and in spirit!! Such a special place and time 💜🕺🏻❤️ @pilchuckglassschool taught me so much about community.

Happy to be showing these cast glass works, I’ll be speaking about the time I spent making them at the most amazing, magical place where I learned so much @penlandschool in 2023 (a community that is facing devastating consequences after hurricane Helene).

These pieces make me so happy and hold many beautiful memories of kinship, trust, vulnerability.. ❤️ and lots of river floating!

For the past year while making the work in Fall to Center, I have been working on a video and sound piece and hoped to have it ready for my talk this Saturday but the quickness and slowness of a life means it is still in process.. the gift of a long show has meant I’ve had the opportunity to move things around and sit with some of my choices so the exhibition will look slightly different this Saturday and will evolve until completion in mid December. The work of 31 emerging, mid-career, and established artists and collectives, along with one poet, are included in FACE / WASTE, a compelling showcase that delves into the multifaceted theme of waste, challenging perceptions and redefining the relationship between humans and the material world.
Set among renovation debris inside a semi-demolished industrial unit, the exhibition aims to provide insight into the deeper relationship between humans, the material world, and the land.
Face/Waste will be on display from October 19 - 15

Swinging between terrified and excited I am grateful for the opportunity to show new work including two new carved marble pieces.

For the past 7 years I have had the pleasure in assisting my partner @michaelbelmore carve granite on multiple public art works and finally felt ready to work my own rock, with my voice. I chose to work with marble, however not the fine Italian marble found throughout antiquity and modern times but ‘Canadian marble’, a white calcite marble veined with pyrite commonly found in south eastern Ontario.

Saved rock dust produced when carving (or scooped from quarries and roadside) find their way into casts, glazes and paint throughout the exhibition, a confluence of materials and processes.

Aggregated studio debris from over the years..

A variety of grit such as granite, marble, sandstone and cement all freed when carving, (or scooped into pockets from roadsides and quarries) find their way throughout the studio as I remain curious to their potential. Sometimes my testing goes too far in the kiln and I’m left with shards, in an attempt to work within a closed loop, all is kept for possible future use. As an artist that works with processes that often require large amounts of energy my commitment to live and work with little negative impact on my environment becomes complicated and negotiated. For me, these tiles represent a continued engagement with extracted world building resources and waste management.

Back to school hits different for us all! I feel compelled to acknowledge how difficult and scary this time of year can be for kids and young adults on the spectrum. I’m so proud of all my kids, in particular my super compassionate, funny guy who has faced a lot of challenges at school throughout the years and still puts his best foot forward. You got this, gr 12 let’s go!! 🤜🏼🤛🏼 and grade 7 for my other guy who always shines his joy forward!! 🌟

May the kindness you show others reflect back on you x a million! ❤️❤️❤️ (no, he is not going to school at Potato World with side kick Honey unfortunately, but I was unable to get a pic at the high school lol)
